Feeding Your Toddler

An active toddler’s hunger isn’t going to wait until mealtimes to be satisfied. Therefore it is best to be able to offer easy-to-prepare, healthy ‘fast-foods’ to your growing child. Food that can be eaten ‘on the go’ will go down a treat with this age group. Here are some great ideas.

1. Chicken Fingers

These are a tasty finger food and your toddler will be especially impressed if you give them a little bowl of tomato ketchup to dunk their chicken pieces into.

Ingredients for 2 portions:

  • 1 oz plain flour
  • 1 chicken breast fillet
  • 1 small egg, beaten
  • 1 ½ oz cornflakes crushed
  • 2 tablespoon vegetable oil
  1. Spread the flower on a clean surface and roll the chicken pieces in it until they are covered.
  2. Dip the chicken pieces in the beaten egg and then roll in the crushed cornflakes.
  3. Heat the oil in a pan and sauté the chicken on each side for about 5 minutes over a medium heat.
  4. When crunchy on the outside and cooked through, they are ready to serve – but make sure to leave them cool adequately before giving to your toddler.

2. Sweet Potato Wedges

Simple to prepare and appealing even to the fussiest of eaters, you can’t go wrong with a nutritious snack like this.

Ingredients for 2 portions:

  • 1 sweet potato
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • A pinch of salt
  1. Wash and scrub the sweet potato thoroughly.
  2. Cut it lengthways into wedges.
  3. Place on a baking tray and brush with the oil.
  4. Season with a small amount of salt and bake for 35 minutes at
    170° C / 350° F / Gas Mark 4.
  5. Turn occasionally until golden brown.

3. Fruity Smoothie

Tasty, nutritious and a great way to establish the 5-a-day habit at a very young age, this is just one suggestion but you can try adding a choice of blended fruits or fruit juices to give your toddler plenty of variety.

Ingredients for 2 portions:

  • 4 fl oz coconut milk
  • 4 fl oz pineapple juice
  • 1 small banana
  • 1 teaspoon honey
  1. Place all ingredients into a blender.
  2. Blend until smooth.

Variations. Add some ripe mango or nectarine to discover a new taste!
