Best Kept Awards

This prestigious awards scheme was pioneered in the 1950’s and since then thousands of Towns, Villages, Schools and Health and Social Care Facilities have earned recognition for their work to improve and protect the environment. In 2004 SuperValu became the sole sponsor of the project.
The SuperValu Best Kept Awards are organised annually by the Northern Ireland Amenity Council and acknowledge community projects that tackle environmental issues and encourage planting schemes, recycling and wildlife conservation. Entrants are judged on a number of criteria, including the absence of litter, fly-posting and graffiti.
Northern Ireland led the way in this type of competition – with schemes now operating in the rest of Great Britain, the Republic of Ireland and throughout Europe under the titles of "Britain in Bloom", "Tidy Towns", and "Entente Florale".
The awards recognise the achievements of communities in working together to keep their surroundings clean and green. Through the scheme civic pride is encouraged and people are motivated to make the most of their outdoor spaces and buildings, to protect our diverse wildlife and plant life and make Northern Ireland a better place to live and work.
