Cancer survivor Joan Cowan (50) from Kells, Co Antrim, centre, joins Ciara Boyle from Action Cancer and SuperValu Brand Manager Jackie McCloskey to call for women in their 40’s to use the charity’s Big Bus screening service after it saved her life. The Action Cancer Big Bus, sponsored by SuperValu, travels the length and breadth of the province delivering digital breast screening, support services and health promotion initiatives. Since it was launched almost two years ago the Action Cancer clinic, which is the first of its kind in Europe, has screened 5,000 women for breast cancer. The leading local cancer charity has found that for every 1,000 women screened, 7 new cancers are detected. Joan attended the unit when it visited a health fair organised by her employer in February 2007. The mammogram she had on the Big Bus led to a diagnosis of breast cancer and Joan had surgery at the end of March, followed by chemotherapy, radiotherapy and drug therapy. She was back at work 9 months after her diagnosis. Picture: William Cherry/Press Eye.
