Teachers and pupils at a Fermanagh school are celebrating after scooping the top title in the SuperValu Best Kept School Awards 2009. The prestigious award acknowledges Jones Memorial Primary School’s outstanding commitment to environmental education, biodiversity and recycling.

The SuperValu Best Kept School Awards are organised annually by the Northern Ireland Amenity Council (NIAC) and sponsored by SuperValu. Each year hundreds of schools take part in the scheme.

Jones Memorial Primary, which has 200 pupils and is situated in Mullylogan near Enniskillen, was chosen to receive the overall ‘Best of the Best’ title out of a shortlist of fifteen schools – winners in pre-primary, primary and post-primary categories in each education board area. The County Fermanagh school took the title after impressing NIAC judges with its sensory garden, wildlife pond, nature trail, butterfly garden and recycling projects.

The school has been awarded a monetary prize to help them with their environmental endeavours and all other category winners receive a personalized sign, a perpetual crystal trophy and a cash award. The prize fund for winning schools, provided by SuperValu, was more than doubled this year.
