SuperValu is bringing its support of the Action Cancer Big Bus mobile unit to the heart of its Northern Ireland operation with a new in-store advertising campaign to raise awareness of the unique service.

Starting this week all Northern Ireland SuperValu stores will play in-store radio messages, narrated by Action Cancer patron Nuala McKeever, telling shoppers about the Big Bus and how they can book it for their community.

There will also be colourful information cards on the shelves to promote the Big Bus to customers and staff.

SuperValu and Action Cancer have worked together in support of the charity’s mobile cancer services since 2001 and in 2006 SuperValu helped Action Cancer pay for and launch the hi-tech Big Bus screening and health promotion unit.

A total of 12,500 people across Northern Ireland have used the screening, support and health promotion facilities onboard the 18 metre-long unit, including 7,500 women who have been screened for breast cancer. The unit visits almost 200 locations a year.

As part of SuperValu’s award-winning commitment to Action Cancer’s mobile cancer services, retail partners and Musgrave central office are contributing over £600,000 towards the £1.5 million needed for the Big Bus in the first three years, including the annual running costs of £120,000.

Action Cancer patron Nuala McKeever, centre, joins Kerry McCrea, left, from the charity and SuperValu Brand Manager Jackie McCloskey at SuperValu Carryduff to ‘shout’ about the Big Bus and the new in-store promotion.
